Isik Kural
With a songwriting practice that moves fluidly between folk, ambient, pop, and more traditional acoustic forms, Isik Kural has mastered a particular alchemy of music-making: the ordinary, tilted only slightly, until it becomes uncanny. Turkish-born and Glasgow-based, Kural’s compositions are embossed with reworked instrumentations, field recording arrangements, and heart-melting lyricism built from the textures of everyday life wherein casual occurrences—trains, rain, and overheard conversation—are charged with symbolic weight steeped in a magical realist setting.
In contrast to the formal rigor of a musical education that spanned the University of Miami, Helsinki, and Glasgow, Kural has a creative instinct that was never taught. A guitar in his teenage hands and innocent observations brought forth playfully written songs as a reciprocation to his surroundings. From that humble and childlike characteristic was born an archivist, who over time collected worldly artifacts, historical details, sound recordings of regions less known purely out of sheer curiosity. This way of discovery set the premise for a reformed method of self-expression wherein sporadic recordings, warm or sore memories, and handmade melodies conversed with each other to reveal their own relationships.
Kural’s technique of trained precision and intuitive assembly is evident across a discography that began with a cassette-only release in 2019 and the RVNG Intl. debut in february (2022) in which the understated sound architecture and songwriting solidified his signature style and vision. With Moon in Gemini (2024) the narrative evolved further: vocal-forward sound design induces a dreamlike lucidity, as Kural's imaginative minimalism delicately tugs at the sentimental frame of the body until it climaxes at the core with a compounding effect—a experience in his music that has become a trademark response. His preferred creative process incorporates a periodic recycling of the fruits of his laborious work—never letting compositions rest—and each time retrieving sweeter new nectar. The results: the reimagined instrumental EP As Flurries and the sonic treasure that is 2023's peaches.
The crucial interplay between travel and songwriting thematically persists, an amalgamation of which lands like an audio postcard. Kural’s latest album, Motorcycles and Cherry Wind, is the clearest expression of this feedback loop yet—informed by years on the move, archaeology, ancient poetry, and collaborators spanning seven countries. Movement, memory, and landscape are turned into song for the discovery of the self in relation to its surroundings in motion.
