A gentle transmission from years prior, Isik Kural’s As Flurries reconfigures a cassette-only release from 2019 as an instrumental, five song digital EP, and provides another view into the Turkish-born, Glasgow-based artist’s world of music making.
As Flurries in its original form, and presented now with preference from perspective, draws its inspiration from Turiya Sings, Alice Coltrane self-released album from 1982, intended for students at her Sai Anantam Ashram in southern California. Unlike the 2021 reissue of Turiya Sings, which extracted the iconic synthesizer and string arrangements, leaving just Coltrane’s vocals and organ, Kural focuses on the instrumental aspects of his earlier work for the As Flurries EP, his voice removed as the compass.
Removing the lyrical musings and literary allusions of Kural’s two albums for RVNG, in february (2022) and Moon in Gemini (2024), As Flurries welcomes listeners to experience the imaginative minimalism of the compositions underpinning the young artist’s prolific discography. Carried along by wisps of synths and fragments of field recordings, the songs of As Flurries land lightly across the EP’s intangible surface, forming a gossamer blanket. Melodies flicker in and out of focus, like the eponymous flurries; swirling about the listener, Isik’s cared-for textures billow with a light gale-force, equally oriented towards reaching and resting.
A warm reminder of dispatches past and music to come, As Flurries is deeply attuned to the simple wonders lying beneath the veneer of the mundane; the winking fireflies of “Um Pirilampo Que Acende E Apaga” and the object sitting “On a Clothesline” reaffirm the mystery at the heart of everyday experience. Crafted with understated grace, and free from anxiety or hurry, As Flurries patiently surveys Kural’s precious sound world.
Isik Kural’s As Flurries arrives March 13, 2026 as a digital EP from RVNG Intl.
