Freedom to Spend Shares Pep Llopis' Destiada

The penultimate movement of Freedom to Spend’s ongoing Pep Llopis reissue series arrives today with Destiada.

Destiada is the 1984 soundtrack for the dance-theater performance of the same name, marking Llopis’ debut score for iconic avant-garde Valencian company Ananda Dansa, a creative partnership that would continue throughout the ensuing decades. Created in collaboration with Vicent Alonso, a fellow Spanish composer and longtime collaborator, Destiada is an elaborate universe of melody and timbre, uncannily and elegantly composed as any dream.

The dance is structured as a lyrical fable about the struggle between life and death as seen through the crimson-tinted lens of the Spanish bullfighting tradition. Inspired to offer a “different musical approach to the world of bullfighting—as a fact, as a dream, and as a ritual,” the duo crafted a wholly new electro-acoustic grammar, built on a foundation of hypnotic repetition, intricate polyrhythm, and a vibrant, maximalist instrumental palette.
