Freedom to Spend Share Norma Tanega and Aida Pavletich’s “Baths of Caracalla” and “The One Who Takes the Falls”

“Baths of Caracalla” and “The One Who Takes the Falls” are the next transmissions from Norma Tanega and Aida Pavletich’s trio of late 80s / early 90s album length sound collaborations, re-emerging this October on Freedom to Spend.

on their final album, 1993’s Run Runner, Tanega and Paveltich deepen their pursuit of creative serendipities, embracing the capabilities of a sampling keyboard, a four-track cassette recorder, and their own improvisatory instincts to dizzying effect.

On “Baths of Caracella,” a volleying vocal loop and arcs of synth downstream the listener onto profoundly slippery ground, while “The One Who Takes the Falls” lades on the digital bells and urgently multitracked vocals to bring the proceedings to a noisy crescendo. The contrasting tones are characteristic of Run Runner, an “operetta” whose surface effervescence yields to a dark vision set in an eerily apocalyptic Los Angeles.

Norma Tanega and Aida Pavletich’s Saturday Dancer, Ways Away, and Run Runner will be released in newly transferred and remastered digital editions, and a small inventory of original cassettes, on October 9, 2026.
