Until now, the music that immersed and infatuated Justine D in a cinematic life – relatable to some as fact and others as fiction – has never been documented. At least never like this. Rvng Prsnts Mx5: Justine D is a pretty damn intimate look at the listening habits of someone that’s been there.
Where there? New York City’s under and above ground nightlife of the past 15 years. While the world went grunge in the early 90s, New York stayed culture sick infecting Justine with more than teenlove for the monolith clubs she snuck into (Palladium, Limelight, Pyramid) and shows (My Bloody Valentine, Nitzer Ebb, Siouxsie). This was the New York City she was waiting for.
In following years Justine turned club patron to matron promoting ground shaking late 90s / early 00s parties at gone but not forgotten Manhattan institutes like Tiswas, Coney Island High, and Life. At these parties Justine turned a growing record collection into her first DJ sets. Justineï¿½s audience would only grow (and grow crazier) at longstanding DJ gigs at Making Time and, most notably, Motherfucker. With MF, she found her place as NYC’s most celebrated and hard working promoter and DJ of the new club era.
Though some of Justine’s audience evolved most remained the same. She still had a party to throw but obscurer songs from her own musical evolution started appearing in her sets. Now we have 23 of these tracks assembled in an almost narrative mix; where Justine came from, what she learned, and who she will always be as told through the music that inspired.
Recorded during a summer visit to Optimoï¿½s Glasgow studio with Twitch watching the wavelengths, Justine opens her set with a sound bite from a Francis Bacon BBC interview (a freak obsession while studying Art History at FIT) while Eno & Frippappregiate into an era of electronic music that The Orb, Nitzer Ebb, and producers likeAndrew Wetherall would all align.
Elegantly accented by a sample from Paris is Burning (a movie that perhaps best explains Justine’s love of her work), the Turntablerocker and Daniel Wang house anthems turn synthetic “pop” of then – Ministry, The Cars – and now – Hot Chip, Glass Candy. After the 808s & 909s, Delia & Gavin sedate the Chic Strings before exposing Visconti’s on Bowie‘s 1984.
It goes from dark to darkest when Justine builds the Crass Walls into crucial Death In June and Christian Death tracks and a full cut of Goblin‘s Suspiria. You can almost feel the glass breaking in said movie’s opening sequence before Justine rescues us with a Madcap love song and The Zombies fade into a the end score from Truffaut’s 400 Blows.
This is the story Justine D: the starry-eyed teenager, the after hour wanderer, the bleeding heart of a community, and the constant believer in good music. If you believe in good music too, this life and mix are for you.
