When you do find this peaceful solitude, remain alert of zombies and know your allies. \u003cstrong\u003ePhoebé Guillemot\u003c\/strong\u003e is the guardian of this world. The fearless, intuitive heroine whose arsenal of melted rhythms and mutant songlines exude from her armour.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGuillemot’s past releases - self-administered and for Total Stasis and 1080p - mapped this world, RAMZi guiding the endlessly interpretable landscape with her warped, dubbed-out tribal dance music. The effect was ecstatic, combative, and tactical. \u003cem\u003eFor Haku\u003c\/em\u003e, the next installment in the ongoing RAMZi adventure game, delves more into the mythology surrounding this mossy culture.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“Messiha,” the first piece of \u003cem\u003eFor Haku\u003c\/em\u003e, establishes early momentum; the slow release, the toddling movement before transitioning your body to your avatars. You settle into this new form and feel for your surroundings. It’s sweltering. You don’t sense any immediate danger, but you proceed cautiously into the overgrowth. It’s important that you never stop moving. Mutant creatures of all scales and feathers begin to appear as you crunch and crawl through the contours, but the voice of Haku rises above their growls and warbles. It hovers above jungle law.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“Maleheya” is the evocation of an even more prehistoric version of this place. It was less crowded with creatures, all forms of flora and fauna seemed to levitate just above the swampy ground. A voice appears from the hillside rock formations and rolls out an origin story in an ancient tongue. Night descends and the zombie infection becomes apparent. It wasn’t always this way. That’s why RAMZi is here. And that’s why you are here too.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn “Anima,” you are suddenly joined by a boy character. He is physically skilled and seems to have fun with the zombies, shredding them to pieces while delighting in their darkness. As you follow him, your pace quickens, absorbing his agility, jumping higher into the air. The monsters grab at your ankles below, not even brushing the bottom of your feet. You’re stronger, but also more desirable.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe adventure ends on a most cathartic and serene note. You no longer have an active influence on this world, you are reverent of its beauty, its strangeness. You prepare to travel back to the other world with the knowledge gained inside, with your own song, the one sure weapon. Perhaps For Haku is a narrative of becoming. Softly but abruptly, Velarde’s motions lull trepidation into tenderness, revealing a loop’s essence as an archeologist would sweep dust from a fragile find - quickly, almost unnoticed, before disappearing with the wind. Sometimes the uncrumpled memories remain coarse, and sometimes they glow pristine in rebirth.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVelarde invokes the lonely spaces where transcendent collections of objects sit in wait. From within and outside of this spiritual storage space, Velarde animates the infinite clutter through intense momentary interactions with her surroundings. So, let’s call it a hallucination: a socially-conducted, aesthetically-charged experience that whirrs, reels, and metamorphoses as a film playing in the deepest crevice of one’s mind.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003ePhantom Kino Ballett\u003c\/em\u003e is an audiovisual drama created by Amsterdam-Cologne-based collaborators \u003cstrong\u003eLena Willikens\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003eSarah Szczesny\u003c\/strong\u003e. An assemblage of performance, installation, soundtrack and video, the work gathers and distributes sonic, optical, and experiential references widely and to delirious effect.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen the Phantom physically manifests, collaged film scenes and interview excerpts dance with kinetically captured, painted, woven, and other manipulated surfaces. Our guides don costumes like puppets, with white phantoms on black shirts (or black phantoms on white shirts) appearing to move unaccompanied through space.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStrobes and smoke machines make sculptural use of club mainstays, while fourth-world murmurings and techno catharsis give legibility to a fragmentary experience where spoken excerpts are cut and placed roughly into non-sequiturs of intentional misunderstanding, and jagged panning reveals only the surface of areas of static visual works and readymades.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWillikens’ transportive DJ sets and music productions have instituted her as an in demand and in command dance music presence the world over. For her acclaimed \u003cem\u003ePhantom Delia\u003c\/em\u003e release on Cómeme, minimal-wave tinged techno chug was paired with five video chapters created by Szczesny together with Willikens, a precursory tale to the \u003cem\u003ePhantom Kino Ballett\u003c\/em\u003e chronicle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSzczesny studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dusseldorf under \u003cstrong\u003eRosmarie Trockel\u003c\/strong\u003e. Between 2011 and 2014 she has designed all the artwork for the Cómeme label. Her work investigates the materiality of media and the history and production of commercial visual culture. Appropriating and reassembling figments of popular, mechanically produced art and culture (both imagistic and textual) inform Szczesny’s contribution to the visual content of \u003cem\u003ePhantom Kino Ballett\u003c\/em\u003e as well as her musical contributions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVaried, site specific iterations of \u003cem\u003ePhantom Kino Ballett\u003c\/em\u003e have occurred in Tokyo and Osaka; at Meakusma Festival in Eupen, Belgium: at Commend in New York, at PCP Gallery in Paris and most recently, at Dekmantel Festival in Amsterdam. In each, a contemporary, Carollesque story of domestic dissociation, public scrutiny and suffering explanation is told.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor \u003cstrong\u003eCommend See\u003c\/strong\u003e, the \u003cem\u003eBallett’s\u003c\/em\u003e tactility and collectability are expanded. An artist edition of 15 vinyl pieces and 300 cassettes capture two alternate takes of its soundtrack, with paper materials commemorating its character. An intergenerational mix of participants gathered under a white (“shiro”) tent (“tento”) on Aki’s property to perform her first score. Xylophone bumped with harmonica, recorder, wood block, guitar, voices and a myriad other conduits, a lively ruckus and spirited sound parade. Enchanted by “Birthdays,” we invited Aki and the Orchestra to perform and record a new piece at Commend in early Spring of 2016. That work, “Leap Year Love,” is a romance between the elements - and instruments - of wind and metal, inspired by the tradition in which gender roles in a marriage proposal are reversed once every four years. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn 2018, as the planet Uranus moved into the sign of Taurus (Francesco’s sun sign), Sea Urchin began to tinker with the live recording of “Leap Year Love,” generating two new, responsive works. “Natal Uranus, il corpo sotto la sabbia” is a scene of environmental tidings, pensive percussion and guitar in rivulets of looping samples guided by Leila's chants. \"Pendolo due,\" or “the second pendulum” is followed by \"una radura scompare,\" or \"vanishing glade,\" where Sea Urchin imagine a couple adrift in a disorienting landscape, guided by lilting, ostinato bass and freeform rhythms.
