“My conversation with Sugai Ken about his experience creating ‘Doujiri’ links back to his travels to Kyoto. First-person shots allow us to relive Ken’s journey through Kyoto’s mystical bamboo forest. Ken wanted to visualize specific Japanese folk arts with this video, all of which have been used for centuries. Each object presented in the video has a special meaning as a ceremonial object or ritual offering.” – Kiyotaka Sumiyoshi

Pauline Anna Strom’s initial outpouring of music came in 1982 under the name Trans-Millenial Consort. Blind by birth, Paula dabbled with music growing up in the south, but didn’t find her true voice until moving to San Francisco in her early twenties and eventually discovering synthesizers.
That first self-titled album, Trans-Millenial Consort, recorded at home by Paula and then brought further life and color by Peter Buffet and Lemon DeGeorge, exhibited a true — and truly free — form of Paula’s creative capability.
RVNG is now working with Paula to bring a collection of her early recorded works to the world this November. We’ve been working toward the best representation of Paula for just about six years. Paula is excited to have her music revisited, but she is even more excited to play music again. If you’ve followed our archival series, we’re all about that agency and figuring out how to bring Paula’s music to life / live settings all over again.
Awaken your third eye with the new Trans-Millenia Tee featuring the visionary art of Karma Moffett, originally used on the cover of Pauline Anna Strom’s 1982 album. Gradient red / blue printed on white tees made responsibly in the USA with recycled, 100% cotton by Everybody. Grab the tee alone, or as a bundle with the new compilation. Check the shop.
We’ve arrived both at the end and the beginning of our path to Greg Fox’s second solo album The Gradual Progression. To celebrate the day of its release, we’re sharing a new video for “By Virtue of Emptiness” directed by Johann Rashid, whose particular lens you may remember from our documentary on the making of Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe and Ariel Kalma’s We Know Each Other Somehow and Stellar OM Source’s “Live.”
Rashid’s work on “By Virtue of Emptiness” is a visual representation of Greg’s individual and universal progression as a musician through personal and performative dream states and stages. The video features Maria Kim Grand (tenor sax) and Michael Beharie (nylon guitar), two artists that contributed to The Gradual Progression, alongside a slew of footage that Greg has captured over the years. Watch the video below:
Greg will tour throughout Europe this September (dates below) and will return stateside to play his album release show at New York City’s The Kitchen on October 7th

This labor day weekend, RVNG/Commend is joining efforts to support Houston. We’ll be collecting goods (mini toiletries, dental hygiene essentials, first aid items, pads & tampons, diapers, socks & underwear) to send via the New Hamilton Beach Civic Association. We’ll also be donating 10% of the weekend’s sales at Commend to Harvey relief. Thank you to our friends Rachel Barnhart (Soap Library) and Lauren Willson (who will be donating 100% of proceeds from her Salve sales in-store) for activating this effort!
Ken made first contact with RVNG the winter of 2015. At that intersection, Ken had already released a pair of albums (2010’s ToKiShiNe and 2014’s Tada) and would share a brilliant third (last year’s On The Quakefish) before we arrived at the conclusion that our worlds should share a closer corner in the cosmos.
We shine a light on what we’ve been creating in that (deep) space with the October 20 release of UkabazUmorezU. Like dark shadows cast on corners and across quiet streets, UkabazUmorezU offers a new take on the old night that visits each day on time and without trace. The album exists beyond listening, its own sense and sensibility.
